Diamond Valley elects first ever mayor and council

In a historic election, the future town of Diamond Valley decided on their first mayor and council.

Turner Valley Mayor Barry Crane received the most votes for mayor, beating out challenger Randy Williamson to clinch the top leadership spot.

The town, whose name will change to Diamond Valley when Black Diamond and Turner Valley merge on Jan. 1, 2023, cast their votes Monday to determine who will be tasked with leading the new town and its 5,500 residents.

Crane and Black Diamond Mayor Brendan Kelly and their respective councils will continue to serve their individual towns until Jan. 1.

In a Facebook post Monday night, Crane thanked the other candidates, his family, constituents and community members who have supported him “through this great adventure.”

“To the new council, congratulations on becoming the first Diamond Valley Council, we have our work cut out and I look forward to the new team that strives for long-term success within our community so that our next generation can thrive,” the post reads.

All of the town’s new councilors currently serve in municipal government roles in one of the two existing towns. Elected on the Diamond Valley Council Monday night were: Brendan Kelly, current Black Diamond mayor, Heather Thomson and Veronica Klobier, Black Diamond council members, Cindy Holladay and Jonathan Gordon, Turner Valley council members and Hazel Martin, an employee of the Town or Turner Valley.

The two communities are located about 45 km south of Calgary.
